There are a lot of pros of an advertising revenue model for products, and when I consider my product (for this project), it makes even more sense to advertise. I think it would get across to more users, especially tech-savvy ones that know how to use the internet enough to use the subscription model and personalized food quiz for the pet food bundle we’re selling. Furthermore, it is an easier way to find niche communities, given they tend to frequent the same youtubers, blogs, and webpages. Finally, its a relatively inexpective way to get many messages across. However, after reading the transript for “We Know What You Did” I also understand a lot of the cons of this method. The main con seems to be bigger than the individual product and more about the internet and revenue systems of the use of ads- and how they compromise privacy and user autonomy. These are huge issues that are getting more and more intense under deeper levels of surveillance and more emphasis on profits over people. I think these are the effects of capitalism and a system that puts corporate in the same and often higher levels of rights than just people.
Also, at the risk of going into a tangent, while reading this transcript I immediately thought about the tarot cards of product design that we saw a while back during the ethics lecture. It seems interesting how problem solving- if not thinking VERY very deeply about unintended consequences- can have dire effects on not only the product, but in this case a prime example of how it changed the culture around the price of the internet as a whole.
