CS 177 Reading: Ethical Jobs

 

I would personally accept a job at Facebook, despite all of the scandals the company has experienced. The reason why I would accept a job at an unethical company such as Facebook, is because of the mere fact that any company can be seen as unethical in one way or another depending on the person. As mentioned in the reading 5.2 Working for Ethically Complicated Organizations, “Almost any social hot-button issue is going to double as a source of ethically challenged industries; there’ll be people for it and others against it, but either way the questions are there. Circles of controversy surround” which backs the idea of how it is not possible for any company or job to be ethically sound, when ethics and moral vary from person to person. Not only that but many people such as myself would openly claim to accept a Facebook offer, justifying it for the lucrative amount of money, and apply cognitive dissonance to justify that action. For example, a recent graduate with college debt may have heard about the Facebook papers and how the company failed to address the issues surrounding the spread of misinformation and the impact the social media app was having on teenagers; they would still potentially accept a lucrative offer from Facebook because the salary would help pay off their college debt. For me, getting an offer from a tech company such as Facebook, despite knowing its scandals would still lead to me accepting it as it grants me an opportunity to set me up in a career path where the salary is high and I get to work in a stable e
