Personally, I would accept a job at Facebook. My values, taken from chapter 5.1, are prioritized to focus on money, comfort, and relative job security. A job at Facebook—presumably one that is tech-focused—checks those three boxes. Generally, work at Facebook is lucrative compared the national average and spending my 9-5 sitting in front of a computer at a Facebook office involves relatively little safety risk or other physical discomfort for myself. As for job security, while it’s true that the tech market is often fickle, having the weight of Facebook on your resume will considerably ease the search for any next role. Additionally, while social media may continue to evolve and eventually leave Facebook behind, the experience working with and in a company that deals so heavily in will be useful in the future. As far as we can tell, social media—and the people and companies that run it—aren’t going anywhere.
As for ethical values, chapter 5.2 discusses the idea of “distance” from the ethically concerning portions of the companies we work for, in addition to being able to affect change internally, considering the fact that we can never truly detach ourselves from every problematic thing out there. Personally, while there are concerns with how Facebook controls and pushes content, I again don’t believe that it, and similar practices across social media, are going anywhere. I would rather be in a position to help address these issues and have a hand in adjusting how the platform works than on the outside, unable to do anything about it.
