Upon reading the hypothetical, I thought about what was in it for me, employee benefits, well paid salary, work experience, etc. and then weighed them against the ethical concerns involving Facebook. The reading made me think about my own moral line and where I draw it. I would like to think that once I find where that line lies, that I won’t cross it for money in the future. If I was given an offer from Facebook, I would consider the direct contribution to harmful impacts my role has. If it is one that I consider minimal, then I would accept the job, since the position is one that in my current situation would help me out a lot. However, when thinking about the larger hypothetical of whether or not I would accept a dream salary from a company I loathe, I would not accept the job, simply because if I loathe this company, it is probably for good reason.
Ultimately these ethical dilemmas are tricky seeing as many companies, products, and services, could be tied to some unethical action. So like mentioned in the reading, Working for Ethically Complicated Companies, I noticed my approach to this scenario started with the two considerations
How seriously wrong do I believe the company’s actions are?
How close is my work to those actions I believe wrong?
