I might consider accepting a job at Facebook– if it has to do with their trust and safety team. Evaluating this job against the 7 criteria mentioned in 5.1…
This would be really hard work that keeps me on my toes, but it’s super meaningful. I don’t think I would have as much leisure time as maybe a software engineer at Facebook, but I also don’t think this is the most demanding job out there. Trust and safety teams tend to not get the most funding, so I’m not sure how much money I’d accumulate, but I don’t care so much about the money. I don’t think it radiates prestige, but I think a lot of people would be interested to ask what I do and would definitely respect what I’m trying to do–change the system from within and help an out-of-control monster hurt less people. It’s probably not comfortable or secure, but that’s the nature of work in trust and safety in tech.
Other than working in trust and safety at Facebook, I don’t think I’d accept a job here. For one, I’m not a user of their product–it hasn’t added value to my life and I wouldn’t want to dedicate all my time and effort into making it incrementally “better”. I don’t want to work at a company that’s caused so much harm to society and is constantly embroiled in political questions and scandals.
