I’m a member of team Meerkat, and I created a persona of someone with the initials TS. After going through our interviews and reading the responses in our study, I found several common themes among people about their reading habits. It seems that people largely would like to read, but don’t seem to have the time for it and are busy doing work or getting distracted by other things. However, when they’re motivated by something, they read and enjoy it, and feel good about themselves in the process. This largely happens before bed, and users like to read on Kindles or some sort of digital format because it’s nice to read before bed. Much of this is summed up in the Proto-persona below, but I think much of what we focus on for our product could involve getting people more motivated to read. As for the journey map, similar ideas are presented, but I realized that people usually start the day off strong (if they got enough sleep), then slowly get more tired, and then they get more energetic later in the afternoon until bed time. Perhaps it could be best to motivate people to read during those spikes in the day.
Persona:
- Name: TS
- Activated Role: college student and project manager
- Goal and motivation: I want to read more often because it is a better use of my time since it helps me learn and wind down/ reduce stress
- Conflict: I want to read more, but I don’t have enough time and I’d rather do other things after a long day
- Attempts to solve (and results): replace phone time before bed with reading, but that doesn’t work when I’ve had extra long days.
- Setting(s) where do they try to solve problem: reading usually takes place at my desk or my bed
- Key Tools/skills: I could use a motivating factor each day to encourage me to read, or even just something to remind me or hold me accountable. I like to read, especially when I’m learning something useful, but it’s hard to make it a consistent routine
- Routines: series of activities that happen often and without much variation – wake up, looking at my phone, get some work done (including reading emails, etc.), go about the rest of my day, and then at the end of the day I usually go on my phone before bed to wind down
- Habits: activities that can be done unconsciously – checking my phone and scrolling in the morning at bedtime, but these could be easy moments to turn into reading habits, even for 5-10 minutes.
