Would I Take a Job at Meta?

At this very moment in my life with all factors considered, yes.

The way I see it, this question is very much up to individual circumstance. In addition to some aspects the reading points out, such as if the compensation is critical in terms of supporting yourself and/or your family, there are similar considerations that should factor into one’s decision: Is this regarded as a temporary job that will be used to break into more ethical corporations and ensure a larger, individual impact? Are there multiple career/job opportunities one had to choose from, and if so, do they vary in morality? Etc.

Say this job is not out of necessity to support oneself. The reading suggests two approaches of analyzing and assessing the ethical dilemma—I fundamentally disagree with the first, which is to “[i]gnore it all” and “pretend like the ethical stain isn’t there or at least that you don’t see it.” With this approach, you may end up feeding into the very immoral aspect you are trying to ignore more so than if you acknowledged and intentionally positioned yourself around it. For example, as the reading suggests, one idea that I resonate with is to analyze the question of “how close is my work to those actions I believe are wrong?” And if it is, how can I intentionally redirect or move my efforts within work.

For example, within large corporations, such as Meta, teams focus on many aspects. As part of an ethnic minority that recently experienced genocide in their homeland (Armenia), one aspect of Meta I fundamentally disagree with is the censorship of ethnic genocide that their content moderation teams ensure. However, if I were to join the company, I would ensure that I do not contribute to that team and their goals (understanding that at an entry level, I could not change their practices if I were a part of this team). Rather, if I grew in the company and reached a point where I do have significant influence, I could even use this influence to positively impact the practices of these very groups.
