Would I Accept a Job at Facebook?

Would I accept a job at Facebook? Simple answer: yes. There are quite a few things I’m considering as I look to my next steps after graduating. Firstly, graduating without a job is extremely anxiety inducing and can feel very much like I’m in no position to be declining well paying jobs. Secondly, there’s actually quite a few things I’d love to do at Meta. Their products are extremely exciting, I’ve spent 4 years studying consumer product design and did my senior capstone building a social media platform and therefore would love to work on Instagram or even Whatsapp. Additionally their technology is cutting edge and I’d be able to learn from so many industry leaders at this stage in my career where I crave learning and mentorship. Lastly, as the article mentioned, I have a lot of student loans that a job like this would offer forgiveness for.

That said, it’s certainly not my dream job and certainly not focused on solving issues that I think are particularly pertinent right now. I think these readings were very interesting because it feels very timely for me right now. I could go so many different directions and these articles helped me reframe my approach to job searching from “Where can I be most useful?” to “Where can I learn/grow next?” It can be easy to get in the mindframe of marketing yourself and forget to picky about what you’re getting out of it and what issues you’re contributing to. The job hunt can often feel too soulless to consider ethics and morals, and this was a great reminder that I have put a lot of thought into what I want, and no matter what happens next, it’s most important that I stay true to that. And for right now, maybe it’s okay that what I want is student loan forgiveness and improving Instagram’s UI.
