Three Different Kinds of AI Notetakers:
Granola promises to be the “AI notepad for back-to-back meetings” that captures notes, actions, and memory without inviting a bot. It makes this promise to “the doers,” that is, professionals who want to stay present but retain control over their notes. By running quietly on your computer’s audio, it beats the alternative by eliminating the social friction of bot surveillance on calls. On the Elements of Value pyramid, Granola sells Reduced Anxiety, Simplification, and Time Savings.
Otter promises that your “AI notetaker is now also your Conversational Knowledge Engine.” It makes this promise to broader teams and managers looking for an automated assistant to handle transcription and routine follow-ups. It beats the alternative by allowing you to chat directly with your entire meeting history to extract cross-workspace insights instantly. In terms of value, Otter is selling Organization, Integration, and Connection.
Fireflies promises to “transcribe, summarize, search, and analyze all your team conversations.” It makes this promise to data-driven organizations and revenue teams who want deep analytics. It stands out by offering heavy-duty conversation intelligence, tracking metrics like speaker talk-time and sentiment while plugging into over 200 integrations. Its core elements of value are Information, Integration, and Reduced Effort.
If I were buying, I’d choose Granola. The social friction of a bot joining a sensitive meeting is a real barrier, and Granola feels like a private productivity tool rather than full surveillance. In other words, I tend to value AI most when it feels invisible, personal, and highly context-aware.
