Granola
Granola promises AI notepad for back-to-back meetings to individual busy doers. It beats alternatives by operating “without a meeting bot”, avoiding awkward bot intrusions. It reduces anxiety (emotional) by avoding bot embarrasment while avoding hassles and saving time (functional).

Otter
Otter promises a “Conversational Knowledge Engine” that acts “like having your own executive assistant” for broad knowledge workers. It wins on hands-off delegation and searchable workflow integration. It reduces effort and organizes (functional), moving into self-actualization (life changing) by elevating you to manager status with a “virtual EA.”

Fireflies.ai
Fireflies promises “The #1 AI Assistant” with “perfect memory” across entire team conversations. It introduces itself as another teammate. It wins through relentless coverage, offering bots, extensions, and deep analytics anywhere. Its elements of value are Informs, Connects, and Integrates (Functional).

I’d buy Granola because most tools operate at the bottom of the value pyramid, proving functional value only. But Granola wins by climbing into the Emotional tier: it reduces anxiety. I’ve had instances where someone’s bot would join the meeting before they did and I didn’t enjoy that. It signals that the attendees aren’t worth direct focus. It also creates annoyance, noise, and draws attention away from what actually matters.
The takeaway I have for my team’s value prop is that functional utility is a commodity. The best product isn’t the one with most features because those functional features can be built super fast nowadays. You have to create an experience that offers peace of mind and creates an emotional value.
