Comparative Research and Participatory Roadmaps

Comparative Research

The first quadrant shows the traditional methods of 1:1 tutoring (with a focus on the English language but it is very expensive). The second quadrant has traditional methods, which mostly focus on delivery. The third quadrant comprises various tech startups focusing on speech. However, these products provide feedback based on delivery (i.e., filler words, pace). Flowy is different in the sense that it focuses on the language aspect of speech feedback, such as suggested expressions and paraphrasing.

Participatory Roadmap

I interviewed two non-native English speakers and below is a summary of my findings:

  • Tone does not seem to be an important feature (n=2); it was moved to “Later”
  • Pronunciation was regarded as very important and should be included in the MVP (n=2)
  • One user mentioned that she would not consider using 1:1 tutoring or English courses. She views Flowy as a tool that should provide opportunities to learn English but the learning aspect should not be the core focus. “It is a tool first.”
  • One user thought speaking formally should be moved to “Later” from “Much Later”
  • Paraphrasing was seen to be a cool feature (n=2)
  • One user deprioritized accounts and progress tracking
