10/27 CASE STUDY: We Know What You Did OR The Internet’s Original Sin

I will first concentrate on my product before addressing the internet at large. One significant advantage is the possible reduction in the costs of our products. This affordability can increase the accessibility of phones, as advertising revenues assist our company in offsetting expenses typically given to consumers. However, a disadvantage can be seen in the dependence on advertising revenue. This model often requires aggressive data collection tactics for customizing ads, thereby ignoring consumer privacy.

Shifting the focus to the internet in general, we observe a similar conflict between pros and cons. The advertising revenue model facilitates free browsing for the majority, provided they have internet access. The ads support many websites by covering hosting and development expenses, particularly seen in news outlets and video sites. Nonetheless, this model can hurt the quality of internet content. The relentless ‘attention economy’ drives a preference for clickbait, often at the expense of accurate information, fostering an online environment cluttered with misinformation. Moreover, this framework can often prevent competition, as emerging companies find it difficult to compete with the bigger players.

Focussing on the effects on the individual user now, the advertising revenue model directly impacts individual well-being, primarily through the decrease of privacy. The extensive data harvesting for personalized ads breaches personal boundaries, inducing stress related to privacy concerns. Additionally, the bombardment of often intrusive ads can overwhelm users, potentially leading to decision fatigue and anxiety. To reduce these negative impacts, companies can adopt ethical data collection, allowing user autonomy through opt-in approaches and transparent data policies. In addition, consumers can pay a small fee to not have any more advertisements but this solution is not as inclusive. Regulators themselves can draft new laws to limit the idea of bombarding users with ads as well.
