Baseline Study Outline – Mindless Behaviors

We are aiming to understand more about the automatic behaviors of skin picking, picking nails, biting nails, etc. We want to focus on habits that are more repetitive and automatic that could affect someone’s health.

Topic: Mindless habits: Skin picking, picking nails, biting nails, etc.

Target User Group: We want to focus on users who engage in the mindless habit of skin picking, especially users aged 20-40 who engage in prolonged activities like sitting in a lecture, working at a desk, etc.

Design A Week-Long Diary Study: Link to Diary Study

Participant Commitment:
Participants will complete short diary entries once per day, preferably in the evening. Each entry should take about 5-10 minutes to complete.

Data Collection Plan:

  • Daily self-reported diary entries submitted via a digital form (Google Form, Typeform, or a dedicated app).
  • Entries will be submitted in the evening so they can be reviewed daily
  • Participants will be encouraged to submit text responses, and optionally, photos or voice recordings, depending on their comfort level.

Data Review Plan

  • Researchers will remind participants every day in the evening to complete the diary entry. Researchers will be available for questions or concerns that come up.
  • At the end of the day, researchers will review submissions to make sure each participant submitted
    • If a participant misses, they will get a check-in email the next morning
  • All submissions will go through the same form
