Comparative Research

Explanation
We evaluated the selected apps based on two key axes: effectiveness and invasiveness. Effectiveness is
measured by how well a tool helps users reduce their screen time usage and increase their focus. Invasiv-
eness reflects how often a tool interferes with regular phone usage. These axes are important in a
competitive landscape because they highlight the trade-offs between control and user autonomy. Some
users prefer stronger interventions (high effectiveness and high invasiveness) while others might prefer
‘nudges’ (moderate effectiveness and low invasiveness). The goal is to develop a tool that accommodates
for different user needs.

ScreenZen

Target audience: tech-savvy users who want to have customization over how they are blocked from accessing apps they use excessively

Unique features: Lots of fine-tuning available for discouraging excessive use

Market need: Aims to be more difficult than more simple blocker apps, thus making their market niche specifically a blocker that is tailored to individual user behaviors and goals.

Gap addresses/improvements to user experience: The product addresses the main concern of other app blockers being too easy to bypass (essentially not having enough friction). It is also pretty seamless once set up; users are presented with a moment to reflect and the choice to continue right when they try to open the app. We can learn from the seamless setup of this product in our product development. We could slim down the customizability to have a few core features, and make it permanently free.

See some examples below of part of their onboarding process, as well as a few custom options:

Pros:

  • Lots of customizability for those who seek it
  • Starts as a free app
  • Onboarding process is straightforward and allows a basic and functional configuration
  • App has multiple ways of adding friction AND preventing you from bypassing (you can set a passcode to prevent easily bypassing, etc).
  • Allows you to reflect on trying to open the app, and gives you limited choices
  • Blends seamlessly with regular phone use rather than having to check the blocker app
  • Visually stops you from even opening the app by dimming the icon, then asks you if you really want to use it

Cons

  • Potentially becomes subscription based? Does lock base users out of some features
  • Some users might not get too into the customization, it has a lot of detailed dropdown

Barrier

Target audience: users who want a simple app blocker

Unique features: Has a by-the-minute usage tracker, and indicates amount of usage in the past month

Market need: seems to be people who are trying app blockers and want something free (rather than paid options)

Gap addresses/improvements to user experience: is much more simple than other offerings, interface is straightforward. However, ads add to the irritation of the friction, as well as the lack of information when trying to access a blocked app. We should consider using alternative modes of friction and allow users to gain insights into their attempts at using blocked apps.

Pros:

  • Simple interface and onboarding process
  • Easy to understand: lets you set simple goals, unlock by opening up Barrier + clicking the lock to unlock + watching an ad to then unlock your locked apps
  • Lets you visualize your usage over time for longer term habit building

Cons

  • Ads…. are still annoying (this might be a pro in favor of friction, but can be easy to bypass as well)
  • When trying to access the app, you are faced with a simple “restricted” screen with no other options. (could be a pro as it increases friction to open up the app, but frustratingly doesn’t provide much more detail on the screen).
  • Doesn’t give you many suggestions/things to change to suit your particular needs/goals

Roots

Description: Roots is the ultimate screen time app to help you set phone boundaries, detox from digital distractions, and unlock more time for what matters. Roots gamifies reducing screen time by providing a daily balance score and encouraging users to maintain a high score throughout the day.

Target Audience: Young professionals and students.

Strengths: Daily “balance” score, great insights about the different aspects of screen time (i.e screen time per app, categorizing apps, “dopamine” hits, number of times and frequency of the number of times one’s phone is picked up per day, “Monk” mode, community challenges, etc.)

Weaknesses: The app overcalculates screen time if an app is “active” in the background. The app is heavily focused on data and numbers and no practical advice is given to users when they’re tempted to use their phone for distraction.

Gaps: No real insights/incentives for how to behavior change. No way to see progression over time.

Description: Opal is one of the most popular screen time apps. What makes Opal special is its comprehensive approach to digital well-being and focus management

Target Audience: Young professionals and students.

Strengths: Different “focus” features, the ability to customize screen time for different app categories, downtime, integration across different devices.

Weaknesses: Most of the effective features require subscriptions, Users can  bypass screen time limitations, dependency on user discipline.

Gaps: No actionable insights given all the collected data, no “monk” mode where users can’t skip app limitations.

Apple Screen Time

Product Overview

Apple Screen Time is a built-in feature with all iPhone and iPad devices. It provides users transparency and data about how they are using their phone, like what apps they use and for how long over a period of time.

Target Audience

Broadly, Apple Screen Time’s audience would be generally aimed at all iPhone users. However, this feature seems to be targeting very technically literate users, as I would consider it a feature that likely only expert users would use. A couple examples could be teenagers to young adults as this group are people who grew up with modern technology, and middle-aged adults working in a technical field who would also have advanced technical literacy.

Key Features

  • See your top-used apps and how long you used them in a day
  • See how much you’ve used your phone/apps over a period of time
  • Set limits on how long you can use an app, built in functionality to notify you when that limit is reached

Strengths

  • Built-in functionality significantly reduces privacy risks from a third party app
  • Comprehensive tracking for all apps on the phone
  • Nice visual displays over a period of time

Weaknesses

  • Time limit is easily bypassable
  • Doesn’t provide any motivation to quit or redirect attention, only notifies

Opportunities for our product

  • Make even more visual displays with customizable options!!
  • Redirect attention/reward so users have motivation to actually follow the time limit nudges instead of hitting Ignore

Social Fever

Product Overview

Social Fever is an app that promotes mindful and intentional phone usage through monitoring and notifying awareness of time spent across apps.

Target Audience

Young adults who are aware that they struggle with regulating their smartphone use or feel that they may be too reliant on it.

Key Features

  • limit social media usage and app usage through notifications and time tracking
  • Able to track specific activities across different platforms (like watching TV shows on Netflix, Amazon etc)
  • Add your own positive tracking (!!!) such as desired hobbies, drinking water, etc

Strengths

  • has a unique approach to redirecting user’s attention by allowing users to add ‘positive tracking’, where the app will also seamlessly monitor positive behavior
  • has a slightly more holistic design / wellness encouraging feeling, making it feel welcoming instead of punitive or controlling
  • has a variety of visuals, and displays of data trends per day
  • displays unique other interesting information (and users love to know about themselves), like # times the phone was unlocked, total tracked apps (i.e. how many different apps did you use across a time period), and positive behavior displays too
  • has additional unique notifications, like a notification that reminds the user about eye health, or ear health, instead of just ‘stop using this app’

Weaknesses

  • Doesn’t have displays to visualize data over longer periods of time
  • Too much text; difficult to read and get information at a glance
  • Graphic design at times looks unfinished/unpolished
  • UI design is sometimes unintuitive when trying to complete a basic task

Opportunities for our product

  • Provide various ways of displaying the data back to the user, so they can access specific parts of their data (i.e. over the last week, month, 3 months …) at a glance
  • Ensure a clean and polished final product, easily digestible and accessible information—be mindful of cluttering the app with too many icons or symbols
  • Provide more customization options
  • Make app as a whole and individual features more visually appealing to use
