Do I agree with the expert Advice?
I think the two recommendations vary. Karen Firestone says that Elizabeth should immediately leave the toxic environment because of Brad’s inappropriate behavior and the overall company response to the situation. On the other hand Wendi S. Lazar advises patience with the current situation. She recommends that Elizabeth stays until her stock options vest, which would allow her to have a peaceful exit and a fair financial compensation. Both of these opinions are stark opposites, which highlight the two possible paths: immediate departure for mental health or strategic departure for financial benefits.
In my opinion, I think Lazar gives the more practical advice. If Elizabeth can overcome the mental pressure and unfair treatment, she can exit after gaining her stock options, which shows both financial responsibility and resilience. However, this is still a big ask, and ultimately it depends on whether Elizabeth values money/respect or mental health; there’s no right or wrong answer. However, I feel like if the situation allows, she would also gain more time to negotiate a higher compensation when she ultimately decides to leave
What would I do as a manager?
As a manager, my main goal would be to create an environment where Elizabeth feels valued and welcome. Here are the main things I would do:
Strengthen Anti-Fraternization Policies: Through Elizabeth’s incident, we can see that there’s a lot of ambiguity and a lack of strict rules explaining what is and isn’t acceptable. As employees get onboarded, they should all understand how to behave in this workplace.
Company-Sponsored Counseling for all Involved Parties: Elizabeth was treated unfairly and had different expectations than Brad. Elizabeth should have someone to talk to to explain herself and validate her feelings. Additionally Brad should be counseled on maintaining a professional environment at work, which would be mutually beneficial for everyone.
Protect Privacy and Neutralize Gossip: To prevent all future issues, or at least minimize them, there should be an anti-gossip policy. A big part of the problem why Elizabeth felt uncomfortable was because everyone was gossiping about her, so eliminating this culture would be better for everyone.
Overall, I think she should maintain her role, at least for now, and then pursue other opportunities as her stock options vest.
