Reflection
In our ethics creative, we explore the idea that people become too fixated on the competition, which, in turn, compromises their physical and mental health. We focus on three teammates who face different issues in the competition: lack of confidence, poor sportsmanship, and overexertion. If users are too focused on the challenges, they may lose sight of the long-term nature of an exercise routine and the importance of starting slowly to prevent injury. Our design is a playful gamification tool for people to find workouts and compete in challenges with their friends, but unlike in a game, users need to ensure they are working toward preserving their physical and mental health. Since our target users are new to having a workout routine, we need to focus on confidence and sustainability, which requires preventing burnout and discouragement. People can and will tire out, especially if they set unrealistic goals for themselves as they are first starting out. We need to ensure that users can exercise on their own terms in a supportive social environment, so they do not focus purely on the competition at the expense of their well-being.
