Product Sense Pushups: Discovery Patterns — Search and Browse

Netflix

Netflix has changed a lot throughout the years. As it stands, it is clear their objective is to get you watching and keep you engaged as much as possible. Every aspect of the experience, from the auto-playing trailers to the Top 10 in your country, is designed to keep you engaged, both online and offline.

YouTube

There are two parts to YouTube, in my opinion: I want to watch any video because I’m bored, and I am looking for a specific video or piece of information. They want to show you the correct video so they can play ads, and hopefully keep you watching. The experience encourages people to browse; they technically don’t care about the retention on a specific video, they just want to keep you in the app. Thus, they are fine with showing other content on the sidebar and encouraging users to watch more videos.

Airbnb

Airbnb is all about choice. Finding a place to stay is personal, and everyone has different requirements. Filtering makes finding the perfect place more likely.
