Product Sense Pushups: Onboarding

Out of all of these apps it seems like Venmo has the most amount of friction because it takes multiple steps for a persons bank account to be linked. Instagram does ask for access to your contacts and encourages basic profile set up although the process of linking this is simple and makes for a majorly better onboarding experience when you are finished since your feed/recommended profiles will feel far more personal. Notion does not have much information it collects about you but does have many walkthrough pop-ups for different features which can be useful but at the same time overwhelming or annoying if you are coming to the platform to do something simple or are confused.

I think that calculating dropout also needs to consider how necessary/eager users are to be on the platform itself. For example, for platforms I don’t really care about being on, I am way more likely to dropout, however if I need to go through then I wont dropout. For example I’m way more likely to drop out of registration for say an online publication like The Atlantic, etc, if I am doing it on my own accord, but if I was assigned a reading for school then I’ll go through the process of onboarding. Similarly I think that although Venmo has more of an information collecting process than the rest, dropout may not be proportionally high because users may be going to Venmo for what seems to be “necessary” reasons (making a payment), so they are more likely to see it through. Similarly, with instagram, I think dropout would be higher for users joining the app that don’t already know many people on there as well. I do think that notion must have low friction because if they didn’t many more people would dropout. I don’t think that Notion can afford to have so much friction just because people who use it likely have other organization/note taking methods that they can rely on making Notion feel like a non-necessity unlike Instagram (for keeping in touch with peopl) and Venmo (need to make payments).
