Through interviews and a diary study, I discovered that one of the participants, Rosella, heavily relies on push notifications from Duolingo to maintain consistency in her language learning journey. While this method is effective in keeping her engaged most of the time, it becomes a source of frustration when she is unable to engage with the app due to her busy schedule. Despite her best intentions, the persistent notifications from Duolingo serve as reminders of her inability to allocate time for language learning, exacerbating her frustration. As a casual learner, Rosella seeks healthier strategies to integrate language learning into her existing schedule without feeling overwhelmed or pressured.

I compiled insights gathered from Rosella’s trip to South America, documenting anecdotes that shed light on her typical day while traveling. These anecdotes highlighted moments of learning opportunities and instances of frustration she encountered along the way. In response to her experiences, I proposed initial solutions to address her challenges and identified potential intervention opportunities for each emotional state she encountered.
