Proto-Persona & Journey Map

My team, Team Monkey, and I are focusing on posture awareness for our project. I created the persona Jacob (a.k.a. JR), who is a combination of the interviewees and study members that we have had.  JR is mostly based on Sophie, as she is an active person but still experiences bad posture. I decided to create the persona of a student-athlete who works out every day but still experiences bad posture and has problems with posture related to long work hours or extended phone and laptop usage for classes. I felt like the student-athlete persona was something that we had not really explored as a group and would bring good insights into our project. JR has a demanding schedule and finds it hard to remember to implement posture fixes throughout the day, losing awareness of the importance of sitting and standing in the correct position. I feel like sometimes people assume that athletes and people who consistently work out automatically have good posture but this is not the case, and including a persona that draws from our interviewees as well as adds new insights into an athletes life seems important.

Goal I want to fix my daily posture…
Motivation … because my bad posture becoming painful throughout the day, affecting my mood and physical abilities when in long classes, working, or exercising/lifting for my sport.
Conflict I am such a busy person, balancing college athletics along with school and having a social life that I find it hard to remember to fix my posture. It is also hard to stay in a good posture position when it is so unnatural to me, and I’m already tired a lot of the time.
Attempts to Solve I have tried to fix my posture when I remember or when I am having discomfort due to an unnatural sitting or standing position.

I have also worn a back brace during the school day, during practice, and during weights but it’s so uncomfortable and annoying.

I have watched a few YouTube videos on posture correction but haven’t implemented any long-term strategies.

I tried setting reminders on my phone, but I usually ignore them because I’m focused on other tasks.

Setting/ Environment I notice my posture the most:

  • In the weight room when lifting
  • Sitting in class
  • Doing work late at night
  • Walking around campus with a heavy backpack
Tools/Skills
  • Access to an athletic trainer and strength coach
  • Has an iphone and apple watch
  • Uses foam roller and resistance bands for mobility work
  • Familiar with fitness tracking apps, but doesn’t use them for posture
Routines
  • Morning basketball practice and weightlifting session
  • Attending classes throughout the day
  • Team meetings, study sessions, and social activities in the evening
Habits
  • Slouching while sitting in class or studying
  • Checking his phone while walking around campus
  • Leaning forward too much when lifting
  • Cracking his back or rolling his shoulders when he feels discomfort
