Before this class I thought that it was much easier to influence habits. I for some reason thought there was less energy needed for habit forming when I knew I’ve struggled with my own habit forming.
I loved my group, honestly I think my group was truly a part of how much fun I had this quarter. I learned a lot from them, got to make new friends, and even get better at working with others. I think I also loved the actual interviewing part. Getting to understand people’s problems was a ton of fun for me. I really did not like a few of the diagrams and stuff we did. I know that story maps and stuff were super helpful, but it definitely did not feel like I got a ton from those exercises. I also did not like the sketch notes. I felt that the grading felt a little arbitrary about those and I honestly think it might be a better way to show that we did the readings.
I did get surprised about how much we had to pivot our main idea a bit to get it to something that was workable. Our prototype creation was much easier than I expected. We got comments that made a ton of sense, but I feel like we could have maybe fleshed out the idea even more than we had already, but that might be for another class.
Our project aims to use nudging as a way to change behavior. It is acceptable because the users we were aiming to help would be focused on improving their language learning and consistency for it. I do not think there’s a user or a use-case where our nudges would be manipulative. I think that is the case because language learning does not have any real negative impacts I do not think. Our nudge is just not really built to be negative, and I do not think we could turn it negative. But again, I think most people do not see their creations in any way but the way they intended them to be used.
Privacy was actually something I think my group did not think about a ton but also because I do not think there was any intention to collect a ton of data. I think for us we only collected a person’s name and the language they want to learn. But if we were to expand this, I could easily run into more information for us to collect. We would have to think about that outside the class.
I think overall I learned more about the science of behavior change and how both easy it can be to affect behavior and how difficult it can be to influence them. I think next time I run into any of these similar situations I would sit and think more about what influences we could have. I also think I would like to try another habit next time. I think we took something simple and made something useful for it, but I think I need to think of something even more simple design wise next time.
Oh I also wanted to say I loved the Cas, they made class very fun and they were very friendly always.
