Team Rakali } Kalman, Konig, Navale, Wang, Xu | Post-Study Interview Script
Intro: Thank you so much for coming in and meeting with us. We are so grateful that you participated in our study, and we are now hoping to learn a bit more about how you felt afterward. Everything you share here, including your personal identifiers, will be kept confidential. Again, thank you so much. Shall we begin?
I have a lot of questions to ask you, but feel free to answer whatever you’d like, however much you’d like. If a question makes you feel uncomfortable, there’s no pressure to answer it.
Behavioral Insights
- During the course of the study, what did you learn about your late-night eating habits?
- Does what you learned affect how you view the habit? Does it change your judgment of others as they participate in this habit?
- Can you share a specific moment during the study that “clicked” for you? What happened, and what did you notice?
Diary Study Reflections
- What was your gut reaction to filling out the form every day?
- What challenged or surprised you while filling out the study?
- Was this surprising?
- Was it distressing?
- Were there any questions in the study survey that you found confusing, repetitive, or hard to answer? If so, why?
- Did logging your behavior ever change what you ate or when you ate in the moment (even slightly)?
Influence of External Factors
- What external factors affected your behavior during the course of the study?
- How did others’ behavior or actions affect your late-night eating habit?
- Which external factor had the biggest impact (schedule, social setting, availability of food, stress, alcohol, screen time, etc.)?
- Were there any environments where late-night eating felt almost automatic (e.g. bedroom, kitchen, study spot)?
Decision-Making Process
- What factors affected your decision to eat late-night or not?
- Mealtimes?
- (Not) Skipping dinner?
- I noticed some days you ate ___, while others you ate ____. Do you have a hunch why there was so much variety?
- Right before you ate late at night, what was the “last straw” trigger?
- When you didn’t eat late at night, what helped you stop or choose differently?
Emotional Experience
- What emotions got brought up during the course of your participation in the study?
- Writ large, how did eating late at night affect your mood or behavior? How did it affect the way you view yourself?
- Did late-night eating feel like comfort, reward, boredom, stress relief, habit, or something else? Did it shift from day to day?
Changes in Perception
- At the end of the study, how has the way you previously viewed late-night eating changed?
- How has participating in the study affected your view of others who eat late at night?
Hawthorne Effect
- Did the fact that you were being studied over these five days affect your behavior during the study? If so, how?
- On a scale from 1-10, how much did being observed change your behavior? What makes you choose that number?
Unique Experiences
- Have we not asked you something you think is integral to your experience in the study?
- Did you have any unique experiences you would like to share with me?
- Is there anything you didn’t log or couldn’t log well (context, cravings, sleep, etc.) that feels important to share?
Again, I’d like to thank you for your participation in our study. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Awesome. Thanks again and have a great day!
