Ethical Jobs Reading

I don’t think I would accept a job at Facebook, as I would find it hard to distance myself far enough from the actions I believe are wrong.

While I probably would have said I would accept a job before doing some more reading, I found out that Facebook has been found auto-generating white supremacist pages, in addition to failing to moderate dangerous content (which has effects like allowing human trafficking or insurrections to occur). That then changed my perspective, as it doesn’t really fit the examples from the reading where companies are only connected to harm occurring. The harm is part of their base product, they are generating and curating content they know will engage users, without moderating even the content they are generating. It’s not just one aspect of their product, generated/curated content is a major part of their product and how they are successful.

But I do think it would be a hard decision especially when considering a. that it is hard to find a job and if I were to have someone financially depending on me, I would prioritize having money for food etc, and b. it would be a really good job to get the skills down the line that would prepare me to do further ethical work as the reading mentions.
