After reading Product Management in Practice, I see a product manager’s job is less focused on the product itself but rather communicating with individuals and taking ownership of all parts of the development cycle. I think something that stuck with me is that a product manager needs to develop a vision and also socialize to make others see the vision. A key part is being able to be in harmony with members of the team, internal and external, making each voice be heard while balancing this and having backbone. I would be curious to ask the author of the book, Matt Lemay, how he feels his identity impacts his product management style and experience. Thinking about the foreword by Natalia Williams, it seems that she feels her experience was comforted by this book but I am skeptical that it can truly address the needs of non-male, POC beginner product managers. However, perhaps the book addresses these concerns in further chapters – I would be curious to learn more.
