As the reading explains, in today’s complex and interlinked economy, one’s personal values are often misaligned with their professional responsibilities. I find it challenging to determine the extent of my responsibility for perpetuating ethically questionable practices simply being part of an organization that engages in troubling actions. The first example that comes to mind is my use of various social media platforms, which contributes to the success of these companies and, consequently, to the negative outcomes that arise from the companies’ choices to do with targeted advertising, user privacy, censorship, and more. While there are ways to justify working at companies or being part of organizations whose choices conflict with our own values, it is important to recognize the potential danger in adopting a mindset that downplays our individual accountability. It would be extremely dangerous if everyone were to absolve themselves of responsibility and take no ownership for the damage taking place. While I believe in the importance of understanding the broader context in which we operate, I think we must acknowledge our roles within these systems. Personally, I would be willing to work at a company like Meta, whose controversial practices are well known, but only if the position did not directly conflict with my values. For instance, I would draw the line at exploiting user data, especially from vulnerable groups like minors. Taking on this role would compromise my personal integrity and contribute to harm in ways that I am not able to justify. I believe there is a spectrum of right and wrong when it comes to working at an ethically complicated organization, influenced by the nature of the specific role. However, regardless of how removed one might feel from unethical practices, being part of the organization inherently links you to those actions. Ultimately, it’s a personal choice where each individual decides to draw the line. If I worked at a company like Meta, I would strive to engage in work that aligns with my values as much as possible and maintain firm boundaries regarding my participation in unethical initiatives.
