Since I used to work for FB, I’d say the answer is pretty clear. I went to work for the company right after I finished my undergrad because I saw it as a stepping stone. I wanted to get good at AI and there aren’t that many places much better than FB. I already knew FB was ethically dubious but I thought I could distance myself by working on positive projects within the company (as was mentioned in the reading). I realized very quickly however that what was FB was doing as a whole impacted my work motivation everyday. What added to this was the feeling that I could do very little to change the direction of the company. I was a junior engineer in a massive company governed solely by Mark Zuckerberg. Soon enough, I didn’t enjoy what I was doing and felt guilty about my work. There are too many other places to work and have a positive impact on the world to stick around so I decided to leave. Many people ask me if I plan to go back after Stanford. That’s an easy no for me.
