Skin Picking Analysis Stickies and Journey Map

Through assumption mapping and creating our assumption tests, we devised three key hypotheses to encourage behavior change:

  1. Skin-picking appears differently in all individuals and should be treated with a level of personalization.
  2. Individuals typically pick mindlessly, so alerting them of their skin-picking behavior may be enough to prevent the behavior
  3. Texture is a trigger of skin-picking, so changing the texture of the skin and adding a protective layer may be enough to prevent harm caused by skin-picking

Our first test is based on the hypothesis that skin-picking disorder is varied enough to necessitate different approaches for different archetypes of skin-pickers. To test this hypothesis, we will construct different archetypes for skin-pickers, develop treatment plans/helpful information for each archetype, and give them to different participants that we identify as belonging to each archetype.

Our second strategy is rooted in the finding that most people pick mindlessly. If we alert people that they are about to engage in skin-picking behavior before they do, we believe this will be enough to prevent the behavior. To test this behavior we will develop software compatible with the most widely available smartwatches that detects when skin-picking behavior is about to occur and alerts the user.

Our final strategy is to leverage the finding that skin texture is a trigger for skin-picking. If we change the texture of the skin and add a protective layer of skin, users will be prevented from harming themselves. We will test this by providing users with a protective layer of skin for the face and potentially other affected areas.
