Product Sense Pushup 3: Take Apart a Pitch Deck

The problem is outlined early, and clearly. They list 3 key pain points for customers: price is important, hotels feel disconnected, and it’s hard to book another way. A whole slide is dedicated to this, very clearly highlighting these 3 points.

They show that this problem is real using market validation, where they list out competitors in a similar market. In this case, they highlight the users and temporary housing listings for Couchsurfing.com and Craigslist.com respectively. The numbers are significant, and they’re clearly the focus of the slide.
The size of the market is shown through a quick TAM/SAM/SOM, but it’s presented in a very accessible way. Instead of emphasizing those words, they use large graphics to get the exact same point across. I also like that they don’t put a large emphasis on sources.

One question I would ask investors that isn’t covered in the deck is whether people would be willing to host strangers in their own house. I would want to see market validation for that specific question before investing.

Some things I want to steal for our own pitch decks are the extremely simple and clean slides. I especially want to take inspiration from their TAM/SAM/SOM slides. I also appreciated how little of the actual interface they showed you, letting you just focus on the idea. However, the interface that was shown did look a little rough. I would want to see a bit more of that memorable branding they swear by in the slide deck. Lastly, I like that they mapped out the competition just like we’ve been doing in class. It’s helpful to see that we’re following what’s expected in the industry.
