Product Management in Practice

A product manager’s role involves less product building than commonly believed, but entails more communication and support for other team members. Despite having numerous responsibilities, product managers have limited authority and must rely on influence to solve problems. At an early-stage startup, a product manager may also have to take on additional roles such as ad hoc community manager, HR representative, UX designer, and office manager, even if these tasks are not officially part of their job description. Given that a product manager interacts with various individuals (users, stakeholders, and other staff) who possess diverse perspectives, needs, and skills, it is essential for them to have strong connective skills. A great product manager can emerge from any background, but they typically enjoy tackling interesting problems, acquiring new knowledge, and collaborating with intelligent individuals.

Question: The role of a product manager in this book differs from what I previously understood. How can I enhance my connective skills, since they are crucial?
