Personally, the answer to the question: Would you work for Facebook would be yes. I do have a few explanations of why I would accept the job despite thinking personally that the company is unethical. The first reason is that there are spaces to work within Facebook (or Meta) that could align with promoting social good or curving current unethical practices – which I would be interested in doing. For instance, I met someone who works at Meta as an ethicist/consultant who specifically works on helping to promote racial equality by finding ways or developing features to support the Black community. He mentioned to me that he helped to institute a “Black-Owned” label for businesses Facebook pages to help promote support for Black entrepreneurs and business people. Personally, this work or something similar would justify being at a company that is overall questionable ethically because I could help to promote more ethical or justifiable practices within the company. Secondly, I am firm believer that to understand the true inequities, you must have an understanding of the inside. In other words, there is only so much you have access to external, so if you really want to understand the ethics or lack thereof of a company, being an internal employee is the best way to do so. For this reason, I would work at Meta not for a pro-longed period of time but to really understand how and why the company makes decisions that are unethical. Lastly, I think I would justify working for an unethical company like Meta by similar to the article, doing something else to “counter-act” the bad. When I interviewed at an unnamed big tech company, my interviewer was an engineer but part time immigration lawyer. She said she cared a lot about social Justice and in this way she could have a steady income but also do work that was meaningful to her. I think I would aspire to do something similar were I could have a big tech job that gave me a sufficient income but also do something part time outside of work that aided others.
