Behavioral-Personas

Drawing Name E
Activated Role Working professional (software engineer) learning languages as a personal practice. Lives in the Bay Area, works full-time, socially active, night-owl schedule
Goal “I want conversational fluency because language helps me connect to people and cultures in a deeper, more meaningful way.”
Motivation E’s motivation is identity-driven: learning a language is about becoming a more connected, culturally fluent person. Travel, music, film, and relationships all reinforce this motivation, especially after trips abroad
Conflict E cares about language learning, but his days are unstructured, and practice is never a settime. When energy is low or evenings run late, practice disappears. This creates a tension between intention and execution, leading to lingering guilt and frustration.
Attempts to Solve
  • Duolingo streaks => keeps habit alive, but leads to “maintenance mode” and fake progress

  • Practicing at the gym / on the train => too much context switching, unsustainable

  • Studying late at night in bed => works occasionally, but is inconsistent

  • No fixed schedule => reliance on motivation, which fluctuates daily

Through the diary study, E realizes the real problem is not motivation, but missing cues and structure

Setting/ Environment
  • Late evenings at home

  • After long workdays

  • While scrolling in bed

  • During socially full nights

  • On calm nights with no clear routine
Tools Duolingo, translation apps, Reddit, pen pals, travel planning

Missing tool: External accountability + well-timed cue

Skills Reflection, self-awareness, intrinsic motivation, curiosity
More

Routines

  • Wake late => work => gym => dinner => unstructured evening => bed

  • Language practice must compete with rest, scrolling, and social time
