BUSINESS: Can One Business Unit Have Two Revenue Models?

Case Overview

This case Isolde focuses on the diagnostics market, specifically targeting hospitals and large diagnostic labs that require gene-based diagnostic technologies. Emanuel targets the research market, including universities and research institutions. Teomik specializes in providing high-end research equipment and materials for genomics studies, earning its revenue from the machines it sells.

Advantages of a Single Revenue Model

A single revenue model can provide a clear direction and strategy for the business, making it easier to align resources and efforts. It helps build a single focus that is predictable, which can make decision-making faster as people know what to expect. Everyone knows when they have reached success because their aim will be clear.

Disadvantages of a Single Revenue Model

However, it might stifle innovation and responsiveness to market demands, as teams may feel constrained by the rigid structure. It could also make it harder to serve different customer segments effectively, since not all markets behave or scale the same way. This is supported by the observation that “without an established revenue model, you can’t know how to select customers or deal with the competitive landscape.” The unique strengths of each unit may be overlooked, potentially leading to a loss of market share against more adaptable competitors. It is important to balance structure with exploration, which ensure new innovation without losing track of the goal.

Strategy as Lead PM

If I was the lead PM in charge of this merger, I will ensure that both parties involved have highlighted their priorities in this relationship. Once they have expressed their values, I will create a system that aligns both of their objectives. I believe transparency is very important when encountering a different perspective. This means agreeing on what factors will guide the final decision and have each unit present its revenue model, strengths, and challenges. Both parties must choose one representative that will have the final say for all decisions of their groups. This will ensure order and limit too many contrasting opinions. I will also analyze their work styles and ensure that they don’t coincide with each other. For example, if one party has a different hierarchy of command, I will make sure that I am the mediator that translates their needs with one another. I will also hold many workshops where we create guidelines and review both work cultures and find a middleground. These sessions would allow both sides to see where their goals intersect and where compromise is needed, fostering a more collaborative and trusting environment as the merger moves forward.
