Introduction
About POSTURA
POSTURA aims to help users improve their posture awareness and correction mechanisms by applying the power of social accountability and peer influence. Our target audience is students graduating into the workforce and are more likely to spend the next few years in front of a laptop. Our app only allows users to be a part of one group so as to not overwhelm them, and we also utilise a physical posture tracker to record posture variations for each user/member of the group (it is shipped to them). The app grants the group a reward whenever they all meet the collective goal. When that is not the case, money previously collected from each member is then distributed to the team members who reached their goals. This effectively causes a loss for the individual(s) who rendered the group unable to reap their reward—a highly coveted coupon to grab a meal at any of our partner restaurants.
POSTURA’s Purpose
By drawing on the desire to press toward a goal with people who share the same values, we hope to assist our users in having better posture and quality of life. Most humans are loss-averse and incredibly prone to social proof. As a team, we capitalize on these behaviors to help individuals with goals to reach. We also make it a point to reduce the effort on the user’s part to track their posture by combining a very effective tracker with a compelling digital system, ensuring that the entire process is both motivating and convenient.
What We Aim to Test
In order to gain valuable insights, we most want to observe how people react to the social aspects as well as the ease of use—we want to minimize friction as much as possible. We also believe that ease of finding the details they need—like the status of the group, individual goals, and the benefits from the app—requires thorough testing. Knowing how users are able to navigate the app will assist us in ensuring that all important aspects of the product can be easily found with almost no thought or effort on the user’s part. By gathering this feedback, we aim to continually refine our interface and features so that POSTURA can effectively serve its purpose: helping people improve their posture and overall well-being through social accountability, motivation, and tangible rewards.
Usability Testing Instructions
Hi, ___________. My name is ___________, and I’m going to be walking you through this session today. Before we begin, I have some information for you, and I’m going to read it to make sure I cover everything. We’re asking people to try using a mobile app that we’re working on, so we can see whether it works as intended. The session should take about 15-25 minutes. The first thing I want to make clear is that we’re testing the app, not you. You can’t do anything wrong here; in fact, this is probably the one place today where you don’t have to worry about making mistakes.
As you use the app, I’m going to ask you to think out loud: say what you’re looking at, what you’re trying to do, and what you’re thinking. This will be a big help to us. Also, please don’t worry that you’re going to hurt our feelings. We’re doing this to improve it, so we need to hear your honest reactions.
If you have any questions as we go along, just ask, though I may not be able to answer right away because we want to see how people do without help. If you need to take a break at any point, just let me know.
Finally, I’m going to ask you to sign a simple permission form stating that you allow us to record you, and that the recording will only be seen by the people working on this project.
Questions
Before we look at anything, I’d like to ask you just a few quick questions.
- What’s your occupation? What do you do all day?
- What kind of mobile device (or devices) do you use, like smartphones or a tablet?
- What kinds of things do you spend time doing on your mobile devices?
- Do you have any favorite mobile apps?
First Screen Tour
OK, great. We can start looking at things.
- First, I’m going to ask you to open up the app labeled Postura.
- Now, before you start doing anything, just look at the first screen and tell me what you make of it: what strikes you about it, what you think you can do with it, and what it’s for.
- Just look around and do a little narrative. You can scroll if you want, but please don’t “click” (or tap) on anything yet.
Tasks
1. Onboarding
Description: After downloading the application, the user will be walked through an onboarding process. This task requires the user to either log in with an existing account or sign up to create an account, as well as requesting other important information. We will now walk through this flow:
- Open the application
- Decide whether to log in or sign up
- If you log in, fill in the username and password
- What do you think you should do if you forget your login information?
- If you sign up, input requested information
- Is there any information that does not seem relevant?
- Is there any more information that should be gathered that is not?
- If you log in, fill in the username and password
- Navigate to the home screen after logging in or signing up
- When did you realize that your account had been created/did you know your account had been created?
2. Creating/Joining a Group
Description: After completing the onboarding process by logging in or signing up, users can connect with friends to track their posture together. This task involves exploring how users can either create a new group or join an existing one via an invitation. By forming or joining a group, users can stay motivated and compare their progress with friends. We will now walk through this flow:
- Check your invites
- Is there any other information you wish you had about the invitation?
- Decide on whether to accept or decline the invitation
- If you decline, you can create a new group instead. If you accept, you will go straight to the groups page.
- If they create a new group:
- Fill in all the necessary information for your new group
- Is there any other information you would want to input about your new group?
- How easy or difficult was it to complete this step?
- Create the group
3. Exploring a Group
Description: Once users have signed up and created a group, they can then see how well they are performing with respect to the rest of their group, as well as how well their team has done together over time. We will now walk through this flow:
- Open your group dashboard
- How many people are on your team?
- What place are you in on the leaderboard?
- Can you explain how leaderboard ranking is determined?
- How well has your team done over time?
- How many of you met your goal in the last reward period?
- In what reward period did you do best?
- What is the last reward period you are able to observe?
4. Rewards
Description: We have a way to reward users for reaching their weekly posture goals. This task involves exploring how users are able to receive rewards and keep track of what they have achieved. Now that you are part of a group, you can keep track of how well you are doing in comparison to everyone else as well. By reaching your individual goals, you should be able to get a reward. We will now walk through this flow:
Let’s start off by doing the following:
- Check what your individual goal is
- Explain to me how well you are doing/how on track you are toward your goal
- Tell me if you have reached your goal yet
- Do you remember what your reward preference was?
- Would you like to modify that?
- Take me to where you would claim your rewards
- How would you accept the reward?
- What did you just receive?
- Rate how you feel about this reward in regards to how much effort you put in for it on a scale from 1-10 (1 being the least happy and 10 being really happy about it)
- How does this reward make you feel about your progress?
- How does this reward make you feel about others in your group?
- Can you tell me how you would see rewards you have won in the past?
- How do you feel about the number of rewards you have received in the past?
- Tell me how well your group is doing in relation to their goals
- How would you feel about sharing your progress with others?
Those are the questions/tasks we wanted you to complete for this specific feature. Thank you for your cooperation!
Probing/Wrapping Up
Thanks, that was very helpful. What are your general sentiments about the app?
Also, do you have any questions for the team?
