Ethical Jobs

After reading “Working for Ethically Complicated Organizations” from Business Ethics, I have determined that I would still work at Facebook given fair compensation. First, the text argues that large organizations exploit workers. While large corporations like Nike do exploit workers in southeast Asia, I felt the argument that cameramen and sewers should be paid higher wages because celebrities are paid highly was flawed. In my opinion, the celebrities provide more to the company in terms of gaining revenue and are harder to replace in comparison to the cameramen and sewers. Therefore, if I were to receive industry standard compensation, I would be comfortable working for Facebook. The article later discusses how it is possible for employees to take positions at ethically questionable companies. They mention how there are many pacifists working at companies like Boeing. Thus, it is possible to actively work at an ethically questionable organization like Facebook and do net good. For example, many effective altruists work in the tech industry. If I were to work at Facebook, I would work to better the world even though I would work at a questionable company.
