Our team (20) is interested in studying morning routines, especially focusing on technology use and screen time in the morning. Here is a proto-persona and journey map based on our work so far:
Proto-Persona
Weary Willa

| Role: | human, college student |
| Goal | Wants to find a way to spend less time on phone in the morning while still getting rest |
| Motivation | Productivity, personal well being |
| Conflict | Staying in bed is good for personal well being and rest but bad for productivity (being on phone) |
| Attempts to Solve | Has more morning classes now; can’t stay in bed for as long |
| Setting/ Environment | Warm bed, dorm room |
| Tools | iPhone, laptop |
| Skills | how to use apps, planning ahead, basic drawing |
| Routines | morning routine; set alarm for 1hr before class, stay in bed for 10-15 min after waking up on phone, then rest of routine; use spotify throughout |
| Habits | goes on phone immediately after waking up in the morning, listens to spotify |
Weary Willa is a persona for a typical college student, drawn from some of the participants of our baseline study. The main tension/conflict Willa has is between wanting to stay in bed and get rest versus getting out and being productive, where staying in bed is also associated with being on her phone.
Journey Map
This journey map traces a typical morning routine for Weary Willa, from when she wakes up to just before she leaves for class. It tracks her activity, mood, thoughts, technology use, and potential opportunities for solutions. While the exact times she spends on various activities in her morning routine vary for a given day, she has a pretty regular/similar schedule. Although she does not spend an extreme amount of time on her phone, it is still time that she could potentially reduce/use in a different way to start her day.
