meerkat – Screener and Baseline Study Outline

Our target audience are college students/young professionals who want to build a habit of reading regularly. Any type of reading is of interest to us, books, articles, magazines, journals.

For our screener, we wanted to make sure that we recruit participants that are within our age range and that want to build a habit of reading regularly. For these purposes, we included questions such as:

  1. How often do you read?
  2. Do you want to read more?
  3. Do you regard reading as important?
  4. What sort of media do you read regularly?

For the Week-Long Diary Study, we tried to strike a balance between the amount and detail of information we are trying to gather, and the effort required of the participants. As such, we included a mix of logistical and content data, with an estimated time of 2 minutes per logging session. We also split the study into Reading sessions and Reading obstructions, hoping to gain insight from any time a participant has the intention to read, not just the times that they follow through with it. In terms of logistical data, we asked about the time and location that participants found themselves reading/being obstructed from reading. For content data, we asked about their motivation to read and what exactly they read. We reiterated that for the purposes of our study, reading extends to all mediums.

For our data collection plan (also linked here), we decided on a Google form because of ease of use for both us and the participants. Reminder emails to be sent every day of the study with a link to the form (same form) for participants to log their reading sessions or reading obstructions. At the end of the study, all data is aggregated in a spreadsheet automatically through Google form, and filtered by person and day for data analysis. Participant reminders and other communication will be sent through email.
