Pre-Study Interview Script
Behavior: Delaying Social Micro-Responsibilities
Target Length: ~30 Minutes
Participants: Undergraduate Students
Opening (2-3 minutes)
Thank you so much for joining today. Before we begin, I want to let you know that there are no right or wrong answers and that I am interested in understanding your experiences with small daily social tasks, especially when you notice them and do not do them right away.
This interview will help us understand your relationship with these behaviors before the study begins. Everything you share will be kept confidential, and you are allowed to skip any question if you’d like.
Before we begin, may I get your permission to voice record this interview?
Social Context in Daily Life (5 minutes)
- Can you walk me through a typical day and the kinds of social interactions that you have?
- Which types of messages do you usually respond to right away? Which tend to be delayed responding to? Why?
Understanding Social Micro-Responsibilities
Goal: trying to make sure they understand what a social micro responsibility is before their study.
We define social micro-responsibilities as tasks that take less than 5 minutes to complete. This could include, responding to emails, responding to text messages, or any social task.
- When you hear social micro-responsibility, what comes to mind?
Emotional Experience of Delaying Social Responses
- How do you usually feel when you see a message you don’t want to respond to yet?
- How do you feel about all of the social responsibilities that you have?
- What do you tend to do instead of responding?
- Do you think about the message after you’ve put it off?
Social Norms & Expectations
- How quickly do you feel like you’re supposed to complete social-micro responsibilities? Can you provide examples?
- Have you ever worried about how someone interprets your delay?
Past Attempts
- Is delaying social micro-responsibilities a behavior that you wish to change?
- Have you ever tried to be better about responding faster or consistently?
- What did you try?
- What has worked and not worked for you?
Transition to Study
During the study, you won’t be asked to change your behavior, instead, we would just like you to notice the moments when a social micro-responsibility comes up and how you react to it.
- How do you feel about noticing these moments for a week?
- Is there anything that might get in the way of this study or anything we can clarify?
Closing
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview and study with us! Your insights are very valuable.
