Background and Context

  1. Can you tell me a bit about what you do and what a typical workday looks like (from waking up to going to bed)?
  2. What do your days off/weekends typically look like? 
  3. Which language are you currently practicing? What motivated you to start learning it?
  4. What’s your main goal for learning this language right now? 

Current Language Practice Routine

  1. When/where does language learning typically fit in your schedule? 
  2. What is the approximate length of time spent on language learning on a typical day? 
  3. What resources do you use to learn a new language? Do you use any activities or tools to help you out?

Perceiving Practice

  1. How do you feel about the amount you currently practice? Are you satisfied with it? Does it feel like too little, enough, or more than enough?
  2. What does a “good” practice day look like for you?
  3. What does a “low” or skipped practice day look like?

What Can Increase Practice

  1. What have you noticed that helps you practice more than usual? 
  2. Can you recall a recent day when you met your practice goals or practiced more than average? What made that possible? 

What Can Decrease Practice

  1. What usually gets in the way when you practice less than you intended? 
  2. Can you recall a recent day when practice dropped or didn’t happen? What was going on that day?

Past Attempts to Change the Habit

  1. Have you ever tried to increase the amount of practice or make it more consistent? What did you try, and how did it go?
  2. Was this hard to sustain? Why or why not?

Tracking and Awareness

  1. How aware are you of the amount of time you spend practicing on a daily basis? Are you intentional with carving out time for language learning? 
  2. Do you currently track or measure your practice in any way? Why or why not? 
  3. What usually tells you that you’re making progress? 
  4. How does progress make you feel? Does this motivate you, make you feel comfortable, or evoke some other feeling? 

Forward-Looking

  1. If you wanted to practice a bit more each day, what do you think would need to change? 
  2. What concerns, if any, do you have about tracking your practice daily for a week? 
  3. Is there anything about your routine or schedule we should know that might affect your practice?
