Product Push ups – Discovery

All of these digital platforms shape how we find what we want—and often what we didn’t know we needed. But the way these platforms help users discover content is a direct reflection of what they need most from us.

Netflix: Engagement by Recommendation
I don’t have Netflix, so I just watched a video of the UX tour on YouTube. Once you log in to Netflix, you’re first greeted by rows of recommendations. The UI nudges you toward algorithmically curated movies and shows based on your history, genre preferences, and trending picks in your region. This is both for user convenience, but also to serve Netflix’s subscription model, and the resulting north star is minutes watched. The deeper you go into their recs, the more likely you are to stay a paying subscriber. They minimize search friction and maximize the time spent entertained.

YouTube: Algorithm + User Intent = Ad Inventory
YouTube’s approach is a balance: a powerful, accessible search bar for explicit queries, but also an endlessly scrolling feed of algorithmic suggestions. Their model depends not on pure engagement but on optimizing ad impressions. By combining search (user intent) with an ever-refreshing recommendation engine, YouTube keeps you clicking, watching, and thus in turn viewing more ads. Every refreshed homepage and autoplay next video is another moment in their ad inventory.

Airbnb: Decision-Making Power for Booking Conversion
For Airbnb, discovery is all about filters, browsing, and comparison. Their business relies on bookings, so the browsing experience puts the user in control. Neighborhood, price, amenities, cancellation policy, and host features—all surfaced to reduce friction and hesitation. More filters mean more confident decisions and higher conversion rates, which are core for a platform built on transactions rather than passive engagement. This is evident even in decisions like having a new tab open up for every listing a user clicks on, so they don’t use the others when comparing and browsing
