Product Sense Pushup 2: Three Ways Into a Market

Jira

Jira entered an existing market. Teams already tracked work, and Jira won by being flexible enough to fit almost any workflow. It plays in a red ocean, where rivals compete on features and price. Its bet was that teams want one customizable system for all of their work and will accept some complexity to get it.

Linear

Linear resegmented the market. It did not try to serve everyone. It built a faster, more opinionated tool for software teams that were frustrated with heavy tools. It is still in a red ocean because it competes with Jira directly, but it avoids a feature war by focusing on speed and design. Its bet was that PMs and engineers care more about a tool that feels good and stays out of the way than one they can customize endlessly.

Productboard

Productboard created a new category, a system that turns customer feedback into priorities and a roadmap. That is closest to a blue ocean, although it gets redder as competitors arrive. I can also see it as more of a resegmented market, since PMs could already track feedback in spreadsheets or in tools like Jira. Its bet was that PMs were making big decisions in spreadsheets and slide decks, and that they needed a dedicated home for customer insight.
