Product Sense Pushup 3: Take Apart a Pitch Deck: AirBnB

The problem slide splits the problem into three main pieces, with big font that makes them digestible and memorable. The solution slide follows the same structure, so it’s easy to connect what Airbnb offers to the problems it identifies.

For evidence, the market validation slide shows existing activity on Couchsurfing and Craigslist. This suggests people already want alternatives to hotels, although it doesn’t necessarily mean they would pay for Airbnb. Press and testimonials towards the end add credibility. I also think the problem is familiar enough that the deck doesn’t have to spend much time explaining why someone would want cheaper accommodation.

The market size slide uses three bubblesto move from the overall travel market to online bookings to Airbnb’s target share. It makes the opportunity easy to visualize, but I would want more explanation of how they chose that target.

As an investor, I would ask: what evidence shows that people using free alternatives would pay to book through Airbnb?

For my Sanity Check pitch, I’ll steal the matching problem and solution structure with large font that makes the problem super digestible and clear in one shot without dwelling on the page for too long. I want someone to remember the main points after seeing each slide once.

An idea from lecture that has been used here is the competitive landscape axes and it really shows how useful that type of visualization can be for understanding what else is out there and who you are competing with. I would also want to include this in my pitch deck.
