Product Sense Pushups: Discovery Patterns — Search and Browse

Netflix: Personalized but Passive
On Netflix, I often catch myself saying, “I’ll just see what’s recommended.” The platform’s confidence in knowing me feels flattering—but also lazy. Its recommendations are almost too smooth. I rarely stumble across something unexpected, and that predictability makes the experience comfortable yet sterile. If Netflix added a “surprise me” or “explore beyond your usual” mode, it might recapture that spark of discovery that used to make movie nights exciting.

YouTube: The Endless Loop

YouTube, meanwhile, hijacks my curiosity. I start with a purpose—searching “how to repair my bike”—but twenty minutes later, I’m watching reaction videos I didn’t even know existed. Its algorithm is brilliant but relentless. I admire its ability to connect content and keep me engaged, yet I wish it gave me more control over why I’m seeing what I see. Transparency could turn manipulation into collaboration.

Airbnb: Empowering but Overwhelming

Then there’s Airbnb, which flips the model entirely. It hands me the wheel through filters, empowering me to define my own experience. Still, the process can feel clinical. The abundance of choice makes me question, “What am I missing?” A touch of personalization—like “similar to your last stay”—could add warmth without sacrificing control.
