Product sense pushups: discovery

Netflix

Most of Netflix viewing comes from algorithm recommendations, not search. The interface actively discourages searching by offering personalized rows like “Because You Watched” and “Top Picks for You.” Even thumbnails are customized—action fans see different artwork for the same title than romance viewers. This approach optimizes for getting you hooked on new shows as much as possible. The recommendation engine uses watch history, completion rates, and viewing patterns to predict what keeps you watching. They make more money when you are locked in to shows perpetually.

Youtube

YouTube drives watch time through recommendations, but maintains robust search because its business model differs. As an ad-supported platform, YouTube needs watch time across maximum inventory. The algorithm optimizes for session duration—how long you stay on YouTube after clicking a video, not just individual video completion. This means they need a dual discovery system. Search handles intent-driven queries (“how to fix a leaky faucet”), while the homepage and “Up Next” recommendations optimize for what keeps you watching longest. The algorithm learned that controversial or sensational content often surfaces because it maximizes viewing sessions. More hours watched = more ad impressions = more revenue.

Airbnb

Airbnb’s discovery is dominated by filters—over 115 amenity options, location requirements, price ranges, instant booking, accessibility features. Users arrive knowing destination and dates, then progressively narrow options through elimination. The search algorithm ranks by availability, price competitiveness, location desirability, and guest engagement metrics. This approach optimizes for booking conversion. Unlike Netflix or YouTube, Airbnb doesn’t profit from browsing time. They need completed transactions. Filters help users quickly eliminate non-viable options and reach bookable properties. The “flexible matching” feature even shows near-matches when exact criteria yield few results, keeping potential bookers engaged rather than leaving empty-handed.
