PROJECT: Measuring Me Take 2

The behavior that I tried to change is procrastinating work till late hours. I measured myself for three  days, starting Saturday 1/15 to Tuesday 1/17, over intervals of 30 minutes, sometimes with longer intervals of time if I am doing a longer activity.

Even though doing this exercise made me more conscious of not procrastinating work to late hours, I still fell into the habit for 2 out of 3 days. I noticed there are many intertwined factors that lead me to not doing work in the prime hours of early afternoon: fear of missing out from social activities, lack of emergency from overconfidence in my own procrastination skills, prioritizing talking to friends, and reducing sleep time as a way to provide more time for myself to do work… All of these lead to me sleeping late, which results in a late start to the next day, which creates a bad start and initiates the connection circle all again.

Little intervals of time were not utilized well because I always felt like it wasn’t enough time to actually do anything productive. While this can be true that requires long times of concentration, I could’ve did my readings on my phone more while I was waiting in line, sitting around, or scrolling on phone. There was one success in doing this: I completed half of my course reading for another course while waiting in Wilbur’s Pho line.

Fear of missing out felt like a big factor to me because it seemed to me that most of my friends similarly do their work at night. Afternoon or early night is the time for interaction. Late night is the time for lonely grinding. There are also a lot of environmental factors that led to me prioritizing other activities instead of work in the early hours. It was the MLK long weekend and the first weekend of the quarter. An overwhelming sense of “I should have fun and enjoy” took over, which isn’t completely bad, looking back, because I did end up enjoying my time in ways that I probably won’t be able to when my schedule becomes busier.
If I get to do this again, I would create a better accountability system. The past few days were spent with this bad habit of procrastination, but the end goal of finishing all the work I have was achieved. There was no bad consequence, and my overconfidence in my procrastination skills might have even grown. Maybe I would get a few friends to refuse to hangout with me if I don’t finish my work beforehand to motivate myself. I would also continue the habit of utilizing small snippets of time to finish readings or other small work.
