New User Flow: Account Creation and Onboarding

This wireflow illustrates the step-by-step process a new user goes through to create an account, complete onboarding, and begin interacting with the system. From initial sign-up/permissions to selecting from a menu of habits/activities, each step is designed to ease users into the app’s functionality. By providing clear guidance and immediate value such as personalized suggestions, the onboarding flow ensures that new users quickly grasp how to benefit from the system. The design decisions of this flow are based on persona insights indicating that a smooth and informative experience will likely increase user engagement and long-term retention. Below are key screens for this workflow:

These screens accompany the green left-side part of the wireflow for a New User. Encouraging users to pursue good habits, activities, or hobbies is a key aspect of our app, and a key screen here is the 2a screen (labelled in blue). Activities are separated into categories, where users can tap-to-select items relevant to that category if they do it or want to start doing it. The tap-to-select functionality is intended to reduce friction when a user is onboarding the app, but we also have a manual input function (shown on screen 2b) that appears when pressing the large “+” button in the bottom-left of the screen 2a.
Another key screen is allowing the tracking of the user’s social media usage, so our app can access the user’s app library and screen it for social media, which are then shown on screen 4 where the user selects which apps they want to track their time on. The apps from specific categories (social media, entertainment, games, other) are sorted by how much the user has used them (this information is available in Apple’s Screen Time settings), and if an app for some reason isn’t available in the categories they can select it from a full list of apps.
Social Media Intervention: Existing User Journey

This wireflow focuses on guiding existing users through an intervention process to ensure desired actions are taken. The goal of this workflow is to capture the sense of friction we want to introduce during their decision-making process. With this approach, we aim to prompt users to pause, reflect, and choose healthier and more mindful social media engagement. Below are the key screens of this flow:

REVISED SCREENS

The screens above are part of the nudging/intervention wireflow designed to encourage mindful social media use. When a user opens a social media app, they are first redirected to a questionnaire screen that asks whether their usage is intentional or unintentional. If they select intentional, they proceed directly to social media. However, if they select unintentional, they are shown a popup screen displaying meaningful memories, personal notes from their past self, or reflections on positive experiences. On this screen, they can either choose to explore alternative activities or proceed to social media. If they opt to proceed, they encounter a second confirmation screen with an intentionally frustrated or angry-looking UI, prompting them to reconsider their decision.
If the user chooses to explore alternative activities, they are directed to the Alternative Activities Main Page, which features a recommended activity based on their past behavior, current time, date, or preferences. They also have the option to browse a list of suggested activities or revisit previously engaged activities for inspiration. Selecting an individual activity leads to its detailed information page, where they can learn more about the hobby and decide whether to engage in it or return to explore other options.
If they choose to engage in the activity, they are taken to a tracking screen, where they are asked whether they want to track the hobby and add it to their Good Habit Jar. If they opt in, they proceed to a preview screen, where they can either edit or confirm their entry. Once confirmed, an animation plays, visually adding the habit to their Good Habit Jar. Finally, they are directed to the Habit Stats Page, where they can view their habit progress and see that their activity has been successfully added.
Power User Interaction Flow: Adding, Viewing, and Customizing Habit Memories

This wireflow was based on the “ideal” power user, someone who has sustained engagement with the app and is interested in editing settings, viewing summaries of their logged habit memories, and adding new habit memories. This flow arose from two of our personas, who enjoyed reflecting on past activities/might look to the app to proactively intervene with their social media use. The green wireflow traverses what it would look like to add additional habit memories, and the blue wireflow shows different ways about how users might look at data on their past habit memories. Something of note is that the blue flow was an exploration of how the data can be viewed, and teammates discussed the possibility of consolidating the flows. We decided on exploring what a combined flow might look like in the accompanying sketchy screens. The pink flow is for the core user setting interactions that we anticipate for users, and we note additional ones that might be of relevance. For the MVP, we will focus on the ones shown in the flow.

Revised screens
After getting feedback, we decided to remove the additional confirmation/add more popup to simplify the number of interactions for the user. They will be redirected back to the home screen, where they can submit another entry there if desired. There can be a temporary popup that fades in a few seconds to confirm that entries were submitted and received. Additionally, a clear submit button was added.

The screens above accompany the green wireflow for a power user (users adding new habit memories). Since the logging of these habits is central to our idea, the button to add new habit memories is readily available at the bottom of the homepage of our app. Users can select from some pre-made suggestions (which will change depending on the time of day to suggest appropriate habits) or add a custom entry. Choosing a pre-made suggestion will come with some pre-filled fields, and either suggestion will allow the user to customize the date of entry, media upload, and tags. In case the user is logging multiple entries, we check with them to see if they would like to submit another.
ADDITIONAL SCREENS

The screens above show different variations of the home screen page. Since our app will include both memories and habits, we would like to test which layout elicits better user engagement and clarity. We also want to test if both are needed or if we should focus on one primary feature, depending on user preferences and behavior.

These screens are part of a settings wireflow designed to give users greater control over their app experience, with a focus on habit tracking, notifications, privacy, and customization. The Settings screen serves as the central hub, allowing users to navigate to different sections, including Account, Notifications, Habit Preferences, Privacy, and Customization.
When users access the Account section, they can manage personal details, review their activity and favorites, update their password, track interactions, or log out. In the Notifications settings, users can enable or pause all notifications, as well as customize them based on specific interests like music, fishing, shopping, and coffee.
The Habit Preferences section is designed for users who want to actively track and refine their habits. They can enable or disable habit tracking, receive habit suggestions, monitor progress, schedule habit timing, and configure habit-related notifications. If users interact with the Privacy settings, they can manage their privacy preferences, teen privacy settings, private messaging, and control whether their account is private or restricted for enhanced data protection.
For further personalization, the Customization page allows users to modify the app’s appearance and functionality, such as dark/light mode, font size, sound, vibration, language preferences, notifications, and app synchronization. Users may also search within settings for quick adjustments.
Things we want to standardize/change:
-
We plan to further standardize the onboarding experience to ensure users fully understand how to use key features from the start.
-
We want to optimize the design for adding/tracking habits and memories to ensure that users can quickly log, edit, and review entries.
-
We would like to test out different variations of our app to determine which core functionalities and features are essential.
-
We want to focus on customizing the user experience beyond suggesting activities/habits based on the sign up questionnaire.
- We would like to identify additional moments where the app can effectively intervene to encourage balanced social media usage without being overly intrusive.
