Week 3 PSP: Take Apart a Pitch Deck

I picked Uber’s pitch deck which identifies the problem by explaining the current state of cabs from two different POVs: consumers who are inconvenienced from hailing cabs by hand, and taxi owners who are burdened with the high cost of the Medallion System. This dual approach uses examples and statistics to convey the scope of the problem by mentioning Ford Crown Victoria as a popular fuel inefficient cab (14 mpg) and the $500k Medallion cost versus drivers only making $31k.

The deck first describes the market as “professionals in American cities,” but later values the overall taxi and limo services market at “$4.2 billion annually and growing,” with “top 4 players combined [comprising] only 22% of revenues”. However, these slides are placed far apart in the deck, and an investor would likely ask for a number upon only seeing the first slide.

I think investors would also ask for a demonstration of the user experience, and the deck would benefit from slides explaining each step (ex. navigate and select destination, choose car size, wait for rider match, wait at pickup spot, etc). This would also be a good opportunity for Uber Cab to show the user interface of the app, since the slides are mostly text and figures related to the market, not the product.

For our Sanity Check pitch, I will replicate the “Key Differentiators” slide and clearly list the ways that our product stands out in the existing market. One of our biggest challenges right now is differentiating our product enough compared to existing PM tools, and a list validates our place in the market. I will also replicate the “Overall Market” slide (see above) because it assigns a dollar value to the market size, shows how much “space” there is to enter an existing market, and mentions some competing players.
