Week 3 PSP: Take Apart a Pitch Deck

The Airbnb Seed Deck

Airbnb’s 2009 seed deck is an effective example of concise storytelling. By stripping away jargon, they proved their model’s viability in just a few slides.

The Problem, Evidence & Market Size: Airbnb framed the problem around three universal pain points: price, cultural disconnection, and friction.

Instead of waiting for their own massive user data, they proved the problem was real through market validation proxies. Highlighting Couchsurfing’s 660,000 users alongside Craigslist’s 50,000 temporary housing listings proved the demand for alternative lodging already existed.

For market size, they used a highly visual top-down TAM/SAM/SOM model. Scaling down from 2 billion worldwide trips to an 84 million target showed massive venture-scale potential without overcomplicating the math.

The Unanswered Question:

While visually clean, the deck glosses over significant legal liabilities. An investor would immediately ask: “How do you guarantee trust and safety between strangers?” and “How will you navigate local zoning laws and hotel taxes?” Some slides to answer (and at the very least acknowledge) these concerns would have raised the credibility of the product, in my eyes.

What I’m Stealing for Sanity Check:

There are many things I like about this pitch deck that I will take inspiration from. For example, “We take a 10% commission on each transaction” is incredibly clear and impossible to misunderstand. Connecting their 84 million trip market share to a $25 average fee to project $2.1B in revenue is a simple and intuitive way to showcase their scale.
