I agree with the expert Karen Firestone. As Firestone mentioned, Elizabeth should aggressively recruit at other companies because her current company’s culture is toxic for her. It seems like her manager is not treating her with empathy and her coworkers and Brad are all mistreating her. I also agree that Elizabeth didn’t necessarily do anything wrong by going on a few dates with Brad. While risky given the size of her startup, office romances are private to the people involved and can be done if handled well. I think Brad was the one in the wrong by leading her on and jumping into another relationship, and the way her managers and coworkers treated her were not empathetic at all of her perspective in the situation. However, since it is clear that her company culture is not conducive to growth anymore and her high worth as an employee is not recognized, she should look for better opportunities and demand equal or better compensation as Firestone suggests.
I do not agree with Lazar that Elizabeth should stay because it is clear that her company does not handle situations like this fairly. There is no evidence that Brad received similar warnings from his manager about the office romance. However, it may be reasonable that Elizabeth tries to stay for a little longer just until she is sure she can negotiate equal or better compensation at a different company. That would be the only reason for her to stay in my opinion.
If I was a manager and found out about the situation, I would talk to any employees and Brad about the situation to try to resolve it in a fair way and encourage more mature behavior. I would encourage Elizabeth to take some time to process her emotions and ensure her that it would not affect her performance ratings so that she feels more able to stay in the company given she is a high-performing employee.
