CASE STUDY: Follow Dubious Orders or Speak Up (Internship Ethics)

In an ideal workplace, I should be risking nothing when reasonably and respectfully speaking up to my boss. If I’m scared to voice my concerns about something I don’t agree with, then what’s to stop them from continuing to assign me tasks I do not want to do for ethical reasons?

What I am risking when speaking up, is my job, my salary, future employment opportunities, and in reality, a ton of money that could be used to fund my home, food, and other essential living expensives. Of course, my employer isn’t holding me a gun point telling me to do something, but if this job is my only source of income, then it basically is.

I think it’s right for Susan to speak up if she is feels very uncomfortable, and it’s the company’s fault if they don’t accomodate such response.
