CASE STUDY: Follow Dubious Orders

One of the most important things that Susan is risking is her own personal integrity and morals. Although it may be true that direct confrontation is frowned upon in Asian cultures, this does not mean that acting unethically can be excused. Morality and ethics are highly valued in Asian cultures so it should not be an insurmountable task for her to raise this point in a professional and concerned manner. Furthermore, it seems that Susan’s immediate reaction to this task was one of doubt and concern so clearly this is a task that misaligns with her own personal morals. She is risking compromising herself for this job when there could be many ways to approach the subject of doing this task differently.

Susan is also risking her future career on this ethically compromising task. If word was to get out that she acted unethically, this would be a great hit to her career and any prospective offers she could get. The vast majority of companies value employees with high moral integrity so having demonstrated that she does not have this, Susan would likely find it much harder to attract other opportunities.
